Forest storm warnings still in place

PEOPLE are still being encouraged to check the storm damage updates from Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) before visiting forests in the region.

The message has been re-circulated this week after reports of visitors attempting to access damaged locations of forests at Kirroughtree and elsewhere.

“The damage caused as a result of Storm Eowyn is considerable, and it will take the team several weeks to make key access routes into the forest safe and passable,” said Martin Page, south region visitor services manager.

Martin says that FLS has prioritised storm damage, and is working to continuously clear the areas for people to return to. Until the work is done, though, the trails must remain closed to the public.

Those planning to visit should check the FLS website for updates on the trails, but also follow signage, stay in open areas, and avoid fallen trees if exploring forests.

FLS says that storm damage is not always visible, making it clear to visitors to be extra cautious of trees and root plates that could turn quickly.
