Former soldier marches out on UK walk

A YOUNG veteran from the region is on an epic fundraising mission around the UK.

Dan McNeil is walking over 11,000 miles around the country’s entire coastline to raise money for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity which provides practical, financial, and emotional support for service personnel, veterans, and their families.

He began the 553-day journey earlier this month, setting out from his hometown of Dalbeattie.

And until it is complete next year, the former soldier will cover 20 miles a day whilst enjoying the scenic views of the UK’s seaboard.

Dan said: “I joined the Army when I was 16 and served in 19 Regiment Royal Artillery. Since returning to civilian life it has been tough for me dealing with chronic pain, depression, and anxiety. SSAFA came and helped with my bills and lifted a weight of my shoulders and I can’t thank them enough for everything they’ve done.

“Lockdown has really challenged my mental health, especially not having a job and a decent routine. One day it came to me to start a walk around the coastline of Britain to help those who are struggling with civilian life.

“I’ve sold everything I own; all my materialistic things and I hope to have some amazing experiences ahead.”

Dan has set a total fundraising target of £10,000 and has so far collected £665.
