Four charged in Annan dirt bike crackdown

POLICE in Annan, and throughout the region, are launching a crackdown on illegal motorcycles.

It comes after an increase in calls over the past four weeks from concerned members of the public regarding dirt bikes rampaging around the area.

Bikes being used include small motocross and electric bikes. They are being ridden at speed on and off-road, while the riders often have their faces covered and are not wearing any safety gear.

Speaking at Annan Community Council on Monday evening, PC Stephen Glendinning confirmed that four youths had now been traced and charged.

He said: “There’s been quite an increase in calls in regards to youths on motorcycles. Within the last few days, a few of them have been charged. Work is still ongoing.

“We are having to be careful going after them as well as we are only covered so much. We have got to be careful that we don’t cause them to collide with someone.”

PC Glendinning mentioned that some bikes had been seized, while other culprits were being watched closely. There had also been plain clothes patrols taking place.

He added that the issue was region-wide, adding: “It’s not just happening here, it’s happening all over. Dumfries is getting it, there’s been incidents in Lockerbie and in Sanquhar.

“It’s something that is quite a hot topic at the moment, and it’s something we are continuing to look at.”
