Free school meals in demand

OVER 3400 children in Dumfries and Galloway received free school meals during lockdown.

And the most demand was in North West Dumfries (582), Stranraer and the Rhins (535) and Annandale South (314).

There were 313 claims from Mid and Upper Nithsdale; 307 from Annandale North; 291 from Mid Galloway; 190 from Lochar; 187 from Nith; and 183 from Annandale East and Eskdale.

In Dee and Glenkens there were 154 children helped; 150 in Castle Douglas and Crocketford; and 153 in Abbey.

In total, £767,045 was paid out, plus £132,960 during the October school holidays. A similar ‘holiday hunger’ payment is expected to be rolled out for the Christmas school break.

Meanwhile, 3193 families applied for the free school clothing grant last year for 3362 children.

Work continues to reach more eligible families.
