Stuart Thompson MBE and Pat Jardine BEM, both began volunteering for the charity in 1986, with Gillian Lamont joining the group in 2008. Collectively they have raised over £170k for the charity’s life-saving work.

The group have been well supported by the community over the years through their various fundraising activities, which have included Tesco collections, Billie Jean’s bike rides, coffee mornings, fashion shows and big breakfasts – to name a few.

They also support local funeral directors to fund family donations through to Cancer Research UK.

The group met Cancer Research divisional manager Kelly Fallon and relationship executive Laura Shirley, on Monday afternoon at Smiths Hotel to receive certificates in recognition of the years of service they have dedicated to helping improve and save the lives of those affected by cancer.

A fundraising spokesperson for Cancer Research UK in Scotland, said: “We’ve helped to double cancer survival in the UK in the last 50 years and that’s down to supporters like Stuart, Pat and Gillian. “Through their passion, drive and determination, they have made an incredible contribution to our work. We are honoured to have their support and want to thank them for everything they have done to help more people survive.

“Nearly one in two of us will get cancer in our lifetime, but all of us can support the research that will beat it. Our dedicated volunteers and fundraisers provide limitless inspiration for our scientists as they keep striving to find new and better ways to fight over 200 types of the disease.

“Together we are working towards a world where everybody can live longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer. And we’re so grateful to have Stuart, Pat and Gillian in our corner.”

If you would like to get involved in supporting the group’s activities or you would like to know more please reach out to Laura Shirley on 07824122454.
