From next month, The Langholm Paper Shop, at 48 High Street, will be taking over the service from the current part-time outreach branch operating out of the town hall.
It means the town will have an extra 49.5 hours of Post Office services available each week.
Elizabeth Wilson, from the Langholm Paper Shop convenience store, said: “We took over the shop last year from Billy and Liz, and quickly realised that it was a bit of a hub for the local community.
“Having run another shop on the High Street we know how much we used the Post Office.
“The natural progression from there was to try and push for a full time Post Office in the town.
“The outreach has been a fantastic resource, and we must thank the staff that have been running it. However, a town like Langholm needed more, especially with the tourists that come to the area.
“The support from our staff, customers, community, local council and the Post Office has been fantastic. We hope to offer as many services as we can, and look forward to being a part of the Langholm High Street for many years to come.”
Annandale East and Eskdale councillor Denis Male praised the news, saying: “The news that Langholm is to get a full time Post Office back is absolutely fantastic.
“The PO that has been here as a part time outreach has been well used and a vital cover until the times full timeline was re-instated.
“A full time PO was one of the stipulations that was laid out for the Bank of Scotland branch to be able to close.
“In the short term between bank closure and new post office opening a new bank hub service is open. This will be until the Post Office is open and fully operational.”
Post Office area change manager, Samuel Williams, said: “We are delighted that there will soon be a full-time branch in Langholm again. “We are grateful that the outreach Post Office in the town hall has maintained service to the community since November 2019.”
The current Outreach Post Office service will close on Friday May 9 at 2 pm. The new branch is due to open on Tuesday 13 May at 1 pm.
The opening hours for Langholm Post Office will be Monday to Friday: 7 am–5 pm; Saturday: 7 am–1 pm; Sunday: 7 am–11 am.
