Fundraisers honoured for charity efforts

A GROUP of fundraisers have been honoured after raising thousands of pounds for a police charity.

An epic run, a fun day, band nights and curry nights have seen the Run Doonhame team so far generate more than £20,000 for both Cash for Kids and the charity Care of Police Survivors (COPS).
Explaining why the group were at COPS’ Annual Survivors Weekend 2016 at Drayton Manor Hotel at Tamworth on Saturday and Sunday, Hardip Atwal from Annan said: “This was to receive a commendation from Care of Police Survivors (COPS) charity for fundraising efforts over the year.”
Hardip has served as a special constable for the past 12 years, in addition to running Atwals Convenience Store in Annan, and says the event at the weekend brought home the work of a charity helping the families of police officers who have lost their lives while on duty.
Hardip said: “It’s a charity that we all do hold very close to our hearts.
“On behalf of the team, we were all very proud and honoured to be there, and it was lovely speaking to the survivor families.”
Also attending a memorial service on the Sunday, the fundraising events organiser added: “It’s nice to see how the money we’re raising is going to be spent, because it’s a really worthwhile cause.
“And it’s still not too late to donate.”
Charity events organised by the team so far have included the Five Capitals Challenge, which saw the team of Sandy Currie, Ian Dawes, Iain McKie, Graeme Scott, and Adam Watret cover 750 miles, running a non-stop relay.
And an evening of multicultural entertainment in Dumfries in April proved a sell-out smash.
Still to come this year is a multicultural evening at Crichton Golf Club in Dumfries on August 22, from 7 pm to 1 am.
And a clairvoyant, cheese and wine and disco night will take place at Dumfries Rugby Club in Dumfries on September 17.
Tickets priced £10 can be obtained from Atwal Stores or from any Run Doonhame team member, while donations can be made at https://www.justgiving.com/teams/rundoonhame3
