Future focus for young artist

BRYDEKIRK artist Katie Anderson has been looking to the future with her Barrow Tarot cards.

Katie began developing the tarot deck in 2020 as part of her artist residency with the Art Gene team in Barrow in Furness in Cumbria, to explore sustainability and possible futures in the town by creating art that would bring audiences with different view points together .

Unlike traditional tarot cards, Barrow tarot focuses more on collective visioning and expanding out conversations from the traditional spaces or sticking points.

Explaining more about the how the reimagined tarot deck can help people look the future, Katie said: “The deck’s contents were inspired by conversations and discussions held with local people as part of my artist residency in early 2020, and I produced a series of hand drawn cards.

“The Tarot is designed to be used as a conversation between two people, the artist and one other to explore the deck together. It’s exploratory, and early testings allowed me to hone in on the best way to guide the use of the cards and the conversation whilst remaining open to new ideas and inspirations. The Barrow Tarot does not give answers, but allows us to explore the possibilities with a more open mind.”

Now Katie is offering Barrow Tarot readings alongside her exhibition at the Gracefield Arts Centre. Her ‘Sound and installation works’ are on display at the Dumfries gallery until November 12.
