The ‘vastly under-supported’ event takes place every Gala Day at the town hall prior to the parade and guests include local dignitaries and land owners, whose land is used for ride-outs, amongst others.
However, this year the Gala and ROM committee voted to cancel the catered event.
Acting as a spokeswoman, the group’s secretary Amanda Kennedy said: “Members of the committee and most of the wider ROM family are unable to attend the event owing to their various other gala responsibilities such as overseeing or taking part in the marches or parade.
“And many invited guests are also unable to attend for similar reasons but despite the small turnout the event is catered to serve the needs of all invited, which leaves the gala footing a costly bill.
“This year due to changes in funding, the committee have decided to cancel the Gala Day civic reception.”
The committee favoured cancelling the civic reception in favour of slashing funding or cutting a more popular event, such as the reception after the crowning, which takes place on Saturday.
Amanda added: “We would like to apologise to all those who normally attend this catered event annually.
“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those who sponsor and support the Gala – we look forward to seeing you all on Gala Day and at the many events in the lead-up.”
