Garden competition glory for pupils

DUNSCORE Primary School has won big at the annual pocket garden design competition.

The competition is run by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful and sees nursery and school pupils, design a miniature pocket-sized garden inspired by the 2025 ‘Our Heritage’ theme, which included food for people, is good for wildlife and reuses something.

Dunscore was one of 32 finalists, their entry used wood that was felled by Storm Eowyn to create towers of insect homes, drilled dead wood, perches for birds, a habitat wigwam, with flowers and edible plants to encourage as much wildlife as possible.

A spokesperson for the school said: “We have learned so much while creating our garden, for example learning how to drill wood, realising that something that people would throw out can be used again or re-used in a different way. We have learned all about different plants and what plants can be helpful for animals especially minibeasts.

“We will keep looking after our garden, watch it change and grow, collect the new seeds and maybe make another as we have been truly inspired.”
