'Giant step' for water sports

STRANRAER’S ambition to become a world-leading water sports destination has taken a giant stride forward, according to MSP Finlay Carson.

The Galloway and West Dumfries MSP was unable to attend the groundbreaking turf-cutting ceremony in the town on Wednesday due to Holyrood commitments.

However, he warmly welcomed the fact that work has now started in creating the £6.7 million development that will open hopefully in summer 2026.

Mr Carson said: “I have met Stranraer Water Sports Association on many occasions, and I share their enormous enthusiasm and passion in creating a state-of-the-art facility that will hopefully put the town on the map both locally, nationally and on the international stage.

“I am confident the new water sports hub will create fantastic employment opportunities for Stranraer while providing class-leading training facilities for local schoolchildren and young people as well as athletes from across Scotland. Exciting times lie ahead.”
