LOCKERBIE author Mike De Luca has turned a sticky situation into something fun with his debut book ‘What is that sticking to my shoe?’.
The comical children’s book started out as an idea between Mike and one of his granddaughters whilst he was visiting family in Australia. Explaining further, he said: “One of my granddaughters when she was about nine wanted to learn how to write poetry. The family live in Australia and their garden backs on to the bush, so sometimes you get kangaroos and other animals coming into the garden and we came came up different rhymes.
“So it started out as a fun thing to do, and when I came back, I thought ‘I should finish this’ and now I’ve written a book based on the idea that we created together. I have changed some things from the original like it’s not about kangaroo poo any more.”

Even though this is Mike’s first book, he is no stranger to the book business, having previously worked as a publishing editor. He has enjoyed making the switch to author and added: “It was a bit different for me going from an editor to an author, it’s been a really fun experience.
“The book explores themes of curiosity, problem-solving, and persistence in a child-friendly manner, while always looking for the positive in any situation.
“In a way it is a metaphor for life – no matter how bad things seem there is always an upside.
“As it says in the dedication, ‘May you keep smiling even if you step in something brown from time to time’.”
