Gretna battery storage plan to go before councillors

A RENEWABLE energy company has unveiled plans to install a battery energy storage system in Gretna.

The structure, which will have a storage capacity of up to 456 megawatts, has been earmarked for land a couple of miles to the north east of Gretna Green.

London-based firm Gresham House Devco Pipeline Limited has lodged the plans with the Scottish Government, and Dumfries and Galloway Council has been consulted on the matter.

Council planning officer John Hiscox has no issues with the plans and is recommending that councillors raise no objections with government ministers.

In a report due to be tabled at the council’s planning committee next Wednesday, Mr Hiscox wrote: “The immediate surroundings are made up of agricultural fields and associated field boundaries. Westgill Syke is located adjacent to the west and south-western boundary of the site.

“The closest residential dwellings to the site are approximately 300m and 400m to the west of the site boundary.”

The construction of the proposed battery energy storage system would take around a year. The site would be secured using a perimeter fence.

Members of the public and relevant bodies have until December 31 this year if they want to share their views in a public consultation on the development.
