THE marriage boom in the Gretna area continues to grow, keeping it as Scotland’s wedding capital.
Dumfries and Galloway Council revealed there were 4029 weddings in the town last year – a rise of 20 per cent since 2019 just before the coronavirus outbreak.
It is the fourth year in a row that Gretna has seen more than 4000 ceremonies.
Before the pandemic the yearly total was near to 3500 but after restrictions were lifted the numbers started to rise.
The council state the increase is due to the enduring appeal of the area as a big day venue.
A council spokesman said: “Gretna continues to be a highly popular destination for weddings in Scotland.”
“The increase in numbers is a testament to the enduring appeal of Gretna, and our region, as a romantic and picturesque location for couples to celebrate their special day.”
The record for the highest number of marriages in the past 50 years was set in 2004 when the figure hit 5555.
