Happy holidays to Gretna... From Gretna?
SEASONS GREETINGS. . . Mayor Mike Evans, fourth from left, alongside other council members from the City of Gretna in Nebraska, USA

GRETNA has exchanged Christmas greetings with another Gretna community in America, with hopes that bonds can be strengthened in future between the two.

Gretna and Rigg Community Council sent an email greeting to Mayor Mike Evans and his city across the pond, in Nebraska, earlier last week.

Mayor Evans responded in kind, stating: “Thank you so much for the warm Christmas wishes from Scotland!

“Our community has grown quite a bit recently, but we talk often about the importance of maintaining our values and staying connected with our heritage.

“As our likely namesake and a region where much of our earlier settlers are from, your thoughts are truly appreciated.

“From me, our council members, our staff and all the residents of Gretna, NE USA we wish you and all in your community a Very Merry Christmas along with a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous 2023!”

Kirsten Herbst-Gray, chair of the Gretna and Rigg Community Council, said that this was the first step in forming a strong relation with Gretna’s American counterpart that could potentially lead to establishing family links through church records.
