QUILTS from all over the world are on display at Shambellie House – with Hawaii featured for the first time.
The historic venue is hosting the fourth annual Quilt Exhibition, running until October 6.
And a highlight is the creations by Sue Beattie, who spent many years living on Hawaii when her husband worked at the Royal Observatory. While there she became part of a quilt group that met in the local park on the island. A Hawaiian quilt is a distinctive quilting style of the Hawaiian Islands that uses large radially symmetric appliqué patterns. Motifs often feature stylised botanical designs in bold colours on a white background.
Now living in Carlisle, Sue had heard the Shambellie show and thought visitors might be interested in seeing her traditional Hawaiian quilts and how they are totally handmade.
Festival chairwoman Ann Hill said: “What a wonderful surprise having these quilts to exhibit at the quilt show. They are certainly different and more importantly authentic. I look forward to seeing them hanging with the hundreds of other quilts from Scotland, UK and beyond.”
