Health hints from Dumfries nurse Lee

A DUMFRIES nurse who works with the NHS 24 hotline has been sharing health hints for the festive period.

Clinical supervisor Lee Dickson began working in the contact centre in South Queensferry in November, but has over three years of nursing experience, including working for both NHS Forth Valley and NHS Lothian.

As such, Lee is used to unsociable hours which this year includes Boxing Day and January 2, which can be some of the busiest times for the 111 service.

They said: “Working during the festive period is part of the job for a nurse.

“Around a quarter of calls to the 111 service are from people who are given self-care advice, which means with a little preparation, they can safely look after their own symptoms.

“My top tip to assist with this is to make sure you have over the counter medicines such as painkillers, cold and flu relief, and remedies for upset tummies readily available at home.

“As with the rest of the NHS in Scotland, we know that the 111 service is going to be particularly busy for the next couple of weeks. If you need quick access to health info, I recommend looking at our symptom checkers which cover the same clinical advice as you would get by calling 111 and are available for free on NHS inform. The symptom checkers feature a wide range of conditions such as fevers, earaches, or rashes and will signpost you where to seek further help if required.”

Lee added: “If you do need advice though, it is also important to remember our team at NHS 24 will be available 24/7 to help and support you.”
