Help shape forest plan

RESIDENTS and regular visitors to Glencaird Hill, adjacent to Glentrool village, are invited to give their views on the woodland’s future management.

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS), which looks after the forest, is reviewing the Land Management Plan for the 500ha forest and developing a plan for the next ten years.

Comprising mostly conifer woodland with some areas of broadleaves, the woodland is a well-used recreational resource, as well as being a productive forest.

The plan focuses on clearing windblow and diseased trees, restoring some areas of ancient woodland and also restructuring the forest by increasing the age range of trees species to make the forest better able to withstand the impacts of climate change.

FLS forest planner Lauren Turner said: “Every forest that we look after has a management plan that is reviewed every ten years. The review process gives us an opportunity to consider what changes we might want to make to how we manage a woodland and sets out our operations for the next ten years.

“To help us do this it’s important that we understand why this area is important to others, so we’d like locals and visitors with an interest to take part and give us their views.”
