Helen King, who runs a Homes for Ukraine Lockerbie and Dumfriesshire Facebook group alongside husband Stuart, is struggling to find homes for the stricken families.
She said: “I’m often get messages from people in Ukraine asking for help to get visas and somewhere to live.
“People are desparate, especially families. One family is a mum with a ten-year-old and a baby. The other family is mum, dad and two children. They are not large families.
“One of the families mentioned will be arriving in the country later this week but they will be initially put up in a hotel by the Government which isn’t particularly great.
“The Facebook group we set up has been good and there’s quite a few families already here.”
Helen is holding a ‘Hosts for Ukraine’ information session at Mid Annandale Comrades Club in Lockerbie, on Wednesday night from 6.45 pm to 7.45 pm.
It is for anyone considering hosting Ukrainian refugees but currently unsure if it is right for them or not sure how to find a match. Due to limited numbers the event is only for potential hosts.
Helen added: “You will find out more about the process and the routes to hosting, as well as hearing from two families who will share with us their experience of having hosted now for many weeks.
“We are mainly looking for hosts who live in towns or within a short safe walk to a town as most people coming here need good access to public transport to enable them to attend appointments and find work.”
Meanwhile, a Sunday service for Ukraine in Lockerbie was hosted by minister Paul Singh.
Three local Ukrainian families attended, including sisters Ira and Myra who sang a traditional Ukrainian song and Imagine by John Lennon.
