Here come the Gretna girls

FEMALE football has arrived in Gretna following the formation of a brand new ladies side.

Gretna FC 2008 Ladies and Girls held their first training session last Friday night under the watchful eyes of coaches Claire Kirkpatrick and Shaun Harrison.

And it was an overwhelming success, with 16 girls in attendance.

Claire said: “We have been wanting to do it for quite a while and there has been a lot of discussion.

“We want to get them working as a team and then get them into a league.

“The social side of it is quite important as well, when I joined Annan, they weren’t in a league.”

Meanwhile, head coach Shaun said: “I played amateur football until I was 40. I have been coaching eight years and I left amateur to work with the youths at Gretna.

“I was ready to quit football, but then I saw on social media that Gretna were looking for coaches. I came down here and now I love the place, it’s great.”

On the new ladies team, Shaun added: “We will start off with weekly sessions and see what the interest is like.

“One of my mates coaches Motherwell Ladies and he just said to me – go for it.”

There has been a lot of interest shown.

And training will continue, for now, on Friday evenings at 6 pm at £3 a session.

Ladies and girls, aged 13 and above who are interested in joining are welcome to come along. They can also contact Gretna FC 2008 Ladies and Girls on Facebook for more information.
