High five for Creesiders

A DOMINANT second half performance helped Newton Stewart to a 5-1 victory away to Wigtown and three points last weekend.

After a frantic opening to the encounter, Aaron Drysdale produced a superb overhead kick which was flicked on by Matt Deazeley to open the scoring.

Wigtown were then very fortunate not to be reduced to ten men after their young full back’s rash kick out on Marc Whyte was only given a yellow card.

Newton had glorious chances to extend the lead with massive chances squandered from close range.

On the half an hour mark, Newton failed to deal with another long ball from Wigtown and Thomas Garrett produced a stunning volley that found the top corner. Wigtown’s lead was short lived, however, as Whyte won a penalty following a clumsy foul inside the box.

He dusted himself down and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to give Newton a deserved lead going into the interval.

Newton came out flying in the second half and controlled proceedings for the rest of the contest.

They gained a two goal advantage with an absolute rocket from Drysdale following good work from Whyte.

Shortly after, the Creesiders put the game beyond doubt with a well worked goal finished off by Robert Middleton.

The fifth goal came towards the latter stages of the game as Middleton notched his second of the afternoon.

Elsewhere, it was a long journey to Lockerbie for top of the table Stranraer Reserves as they faced Upper Annandale. A very even game between the two sides finished 3-3.

A free kick from Matthew Robertson, a spectacular effort from Moray Ferguson and a well taken third from Rory McIntyre were the Reserves goalscorers.

But each time they went in front the Uppers replied, with the Moffat side’s third goal coming from the penalty spot.

Over at Castle Cary Park, a brace from David Hughes and a Dean Agnew effort helped Creetown to a 3-0 victory at home to Lochmaben.
