Historic fourth term for Cornet Oran

ORAN Keenan is set to go down in the Annan history books as he takes on the role of Cornet for the fourth time.

He was appointed following an emergency general meeting of the Annan Riding of the Marches committee on Monday night.

It followed the resignation at the weekend of Ross Hunt, who was sashed as 2023 Cornet earlier this year.

RoM convenor Stuart Thompson said: “Annan Riding of the Marches has accepted the resignation of Ross Hunt from his position as Cornet 2023 as, due to circumstances outwith his control, he is unable to fulfil the duties the role requires.

“The General Committee has formally appointed Oran Keenan as Cornet 2023. Cornet Oran officially took up his new role when he led the rideout on Tuesday evening.

“We thank Ross for his support to date and wish Cornet Oran, the rest of the official party and the community of Annan a successful Riding of the Marches fortnight. Safe Oot – Safe In.”

Project design engineer Oran, 28, was Annan Cornet for the first time in 2020, receiving his sash in early March that year, just weeks before covid hit the UK.

His duties were subsequently curtailed that summer and limited again in 2021, but finally last year he got to fully embrace the role. He said: “I was first sashed in 2020 then cover hit fairly soon after. There was no sashing in 2021 then last year, 2022, was my first full year.

“Between 2020 and now I’ve completed the non-riding duties as and when applicable, such as the Xmas lights switch on and representing AROM at Remembrance Day.”

Meanwhile, the RoM organisers have put a call out for any stalls or organisations who would like to fundraise at the Mini Highland Games on the day. Interested parties should contact Stuart on 07901 710559.

They are also encouraging as many groups and individuals to enter the parade, either on foot, car, trailer or lorry.
