Historic house to open gardens
KINMOUNT House will open its gardens to the public for the first time this Sunday as the Birkbeck family host a special charity event in support of Alzheimer Scotland and the Scottish Garden Scheme. Organised by Mr and Mrs Birkbeck, the opening is both a celebration of the estate’s historic grounds and a deeply personal effort to raise funds. Fiona Birkbeck says the event is a meaningful way to honour her late mother’s memory while supporting others affected by the condition. Visitors will have a rare opportunity to explore the estate’s Italian gardens, admired for their formal layout and detailed planting. The wider grounds will also be open, with walks leading around the ornamental lake offering views across the Solway and surrounding countryside. Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon, including tea and coffee, cream teas and a selection of savoury food, allowing guests to relax and enjoy the setting. The garden are open from 2-5 pm and entry is £5 per person with children admitted free of charge. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on leads at all times. Due to the nature of the terrain, wheelchair access is limited. The event, on May 3, marks the first time the gardens at Kinmount House have been opened in this way, giving the public a chance to experience the estate while contributing to two important causes. The Birkbeck family hope the day will not only raise vital funds but also increase awareness of Alzheimer’s and the support available to those living with it.
