THE NUMBER of deaths that resulted from homelessness in Dumfries and Galloway rose by more than a quarter in the year up to 2020, new figures reveal.
Data released this week by National Records of Scotland shows the region’s homeless death rate jumping from 35.1 deaths per one million in 2018 to 45.5 the following year.
Using the figures, it can be estimated that around seven homeless deaths were recorded in the region in 2019.
Out of Scotland’s 32 local authorities, Dumfries and Galloway Council had the 14th lowest rate overall, however, the rise experienced locally over this period was more than two times as much as Scotland’s national average of ten per cent.
