AN ELDERLY woman is making her way across the entirety of the United Kingdom on a 2,500 mile charity walk.
Angela Hougham arrived in Annan this week, having racked up a whopping 1,000 miles on her journey for the Alzheimers Society.
Despite being 69, going on 70, Angela has been taking on this challenge with barely any help.
She said: “I had been planning this walk for four years, and I was about to start in 2020 when covid hit.
“Since then, the support driver I had hired dropped out, I had to hire a new one, and then that driver dropped out, too!
“I’ve been walking for a mile at a time, walking back to my camper van, and then driving to the point where I turned around to continue. At this rate, I might end up doing 5,000 miles!”
Angela started her journey in Dartford, and hopefully aims to end her long trek through the UK in Bristol.
Between then and now, she has already fully traversed both the Isle of Wight and Wales, and hopes to travel clockwise around the UK.
Born and raised in Buckinghamshire, Angela commented on why she decided to donate to the Alzheimers Society:
“I was working in a charity shop back then. Every time I watched the television, or turned on the radio, or read a newspaper, or spoke to a friend or colleague, I’d hear about alzheimers.
“Eventually it got to the point where I started to get really worried and invested in it, and one day I decided that I was going to do something about it rather than sitting on my hands.
“I’m not as mobile as I used to be, so I’ve planned a route that only goes along safe roads and through beach towns. I’ll probably return to Annan in a few weeks, since it seems lovely.”
