How common is your name?

A GENEALOGY website has revealed the most common surnames in Dumfriesshire in 1841.

And topping the list was Bell with 2696 entries, based on old records.

Making up the rest of the top ten were: Johnston, 2010; Irving, 1803; Smith, 1599; Scott, 1499; Brown, 1458; Graham, 1457; Little, 1432; Thomson, 1402; and Johnstone, 1362.

Many of these are still prolific in the region today.

Others to make an appearance in the top 50 include Murray, Kerr, Halliday, Maxwell, Moffat, Harkness, Black and Edgar.

The website has a host of old records, including school leaving certificates going back to 1894; the General Register of Lunatics held by parishes and Rolls of Male Heads of Families.
