SAFETY CAMPAIGN . . . groups met with police at Dumfries Town Centre

Police inspector Amy Ritchie met with a range of partners to share some key messages to help keep people safe throughout the festive period.

The campaign is designed to raise awareness of the simple steps you can take to protect yourself, your belongings and your property at one of the busiest times of the year.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, street pastors, Ambulance Service, Trading Standards and Dumfries and Galloway Council are just some of the partners involved in the campaign.

Speaking at the launch, Inspector Ritchie said: “All of the partners involved in this campaign are working together to keep every community in the region safe this Christmas.

“The festive season remains one of the busiest times of the year and we ultimately want everyone to enjoy themselves. We have bespoke action plans in each area to help us achieve that and I would encourage everyone to play their part in keeping themselves safe.

“Small steps to personal safety are all that’s required. For example, plan your nights out – stick with friends and know how you are getting home. Book a taxi from a licensed company or get friends or family to take you home.

“Secure your home by keeping cash there to a minimum and gifts out of view. If your plans include being away from home then don’t advertise this on social media.

“Drink responsibly and don’t leave drink unattended. Please don’t take drugs – there is no safe way of taking them, and avoid confrontations: just walk away and remember that one punch can ruin two lives.

“If you do spot something suspicious then report this to the police by calling 101 or stopping an officer in the street.

“We’re here to keep people safe at all times of the year and wish Dumfries and Galloway communities a safe and enjoyable time over the festive period.”
