Hundreds attend military event

GARLISTON’S military weekend returned last week and marked a special anniversary.

Now in its seventh year, the two-day event at Sobie Tower – which acts as a fundraiser for military charities and victims of conflicts – draws re-enactors and visitors from far and wide to the town.

This year it attracted over 500 people to the historic site, with event organiser Steve Hanna saying: “We welcomed over 500 folk to Sorbie Tower, with thanks to Clan Hanney who hosted the event.

“This year marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landing in which Garlieston played such an important part. We marked this with a special memorial service at the Mulberry Stone in town. We also remembered those who fought further afield, like the Chindits of Burma, a relative of mine being one of them.

“The aim isn’t to glorify war but to educate and remember those who have given so much, so we may all enjoy our freedom. I would like to thank again all those who supported the event and made it such a success. Planning has already started for next year.”
