Ian McLatchie says the town is in a disgusting state, thanks to many dog owners failing to pick up after their pet pooches.
The local stalwart, who also serves as Lockerbie Gala and ROM chairman and as a community councillor, is sick of the sight of dog mess.
He said: “We need to drum in to people just how bad the situation is. “Every week in the pub someone comes in with a dog poo horror story.
“At a kid’s gala event, someone went to pop a cone over some dog mess, only to realise when they picked the cone up that it was already covering a second lot of mess – it’s utterly disgusting.”
He added: “Not only does it make our town look embarrassingly dirty, but it’s also a massive health risk.
“I read that it has been estimated that a single gram of dog waste can contain 23 million fecal coliform bacteria, which are known to cause cramps, diarrhoea, intestinal illness and even serious kidney disorders in humans.
“You hear of children playing, falling in the muck, getting traces near their eyes and nearly blinding themselves. “Dog owners need to start taking responsibility.”
■ In Dumfries and Galloway dog owners who get caught failing to pick up are issued a fixed penalty. People can report dog fouling hotspots and issues to the community safety team by emailing communitysafetyteam@dumg al.gov.uk or calling the council on 030 33 33 3000.
