It’s a write off!

DEBTS totalling £822,750 are to be written off by cash-strapped Dumfries and Galloway Council.

They include 1909 unpaid domestic council tax bills, worth £423,257.

However, officials have stressed that between 95-97 per cent of all the region’s council tax is collected and that they rigorously pursue debts.

A detailed breakdown and report on the matter will go before councillors on the enabling and customer service committee next week.

They will also hear that £234,251 of the total relates to seven firms that owed the local authority for non-domestic rates and council tax.

But they are no longer being chased due to the businesses either being dissolved or liquidated.

One shop owed £70,667 but has ceased trading, and another firm owed £109,348 but has been liquidated.

And when it comes to these type of business payments, the collection rate last year was 96.6 per cent.

Revenues and benefit manager Lorna Campbell said: “While there continues to be financial challenges in the economy, collection levels for Council Tax remain high.”

Meanwhile, at a budget setting meeting in February, councillors agreed to increase council tax in Dumfries and Galloway by nine per cent for this 2025-6 year.
