It's going to the wire

ANNAN Athletic have two games left of the regular season to confirm their place in League One for a third season.

With just two league fixtures remaining, Annan Athletic occupy the third tier relegation play-off spot.

They trail eighth place, and currently safe, Inverness Caledonian Thistle by a single point.

However, in order to achieve automatic safety, the Black and Golds would realistically need to finish up with one point more than Caley, as the Highland side boast a much greater goal difference.

A win for Athletic manager Wullie Gibson and his players tomorrow afternoon against Dumbarton at The Rock would ensure it goes down to the final day of the season on May 3.

But should Athletic fail to win and Inverness manage to beat Arbroath, then their play-off place will be all but confirmed.

So far this season Annan have beaten Dumbarton twice, which also happened to include a 5-1 demolition at The Rock in the middle of December, while the teams drew 1-1 at Galabank back in September.

Gibson said: “They have been (picking up good results), they’ve got nothing to lose and they’ll be playing with no worries.

“They’ll be looking to play for contracts elsewhere or at Dumbarton, and that shows with recent results and performances. They got another point (against Montrose last Saturday). It will be a very difficult game and we’ve got to approach it in the same manner which we did against Arbroath.”
