DUMFRIES neighbours Henry Grierson and Joyce Nish are fed up feeling ‘trapped’ in their homes every time it rains.
They both live on Carrick Road in Lochside but are regularly confronted with muddy rainwater flooding their street and sometimes their gardens.
Despite their frequent calls to Dumfries and Galloway Council, the problem persists.
Henry this week said: “This has been going on since June 2020, every time it rains the road and pavement flood. The water can be anywhere between 6-8 inches or even more if there’s been a massive downpour. “Buses and cars go through it and create waves that go into people’s gardens and sometimes up to their front doors.
“I’ve tried contacting the council multiple times about it but I never get any where. They came out and replaced the drain last summer but didn’t do anything, and when there’s mud, leaves and twigs on the ground it make it ten times worse, it takes forever to drain away.”
Joyce is also no stranger to the flooding but last weekend she faced a different kind of danger when the stagnant water in front of her house froze. She said “On Sunday when it froze I thought someone was going to get seriously hurt because of the large patch of ice, I couldn’t go outside it was that dangerous, the street wasn’t gritted so I called the police who came and took a look, then later in the day a gritter showed up.
“Even though the water has receded and two guys were out cleaning the street earlier today [Wednesday], it will keep happening because the pipes and drains just can’t cope with the amount of water and muck.
“There have been times when water has been right up to my front door and knocked down a bit of the garden wall and I called the council to ask for help and for something to be done it and I was told to just get sandbags. I’m disabled, how am I meant to go and get sandbags? You shouldn’t need sandbags living in a housing estate, it’s not like I live on the banks of the Nith.
“So I’m left trapped in my house waiting for the water to go down.”
Dumfries and Galloway Council were contacted for comment.
