THE last of the region’s agricultural shows takes place this weekend, in Langholm.
As is traditional, the Eskdale event will close off the 2024 show season locally.
And the organisers promise to go out with a bang with a host of new attractions lined up for 2024 at the Castleholm site.
The Horse Loggers Association will show the ancient tradition of timber extraction, while Longtown-based Komatsu will offer a contrast with their specialised, modern-day machinery.
The firm is also bringing along a timber harvesting simulator so visitors can have a go and experience what it’s like to sit in a state-of-the-art machine.
Show chairman Robin Vevers, above, said: “It’s the old and the new. We really appreciate local companies doing this.”
Also appearing at the show for the first time will be The Steel Bonnets re-enactment group, who will stage historic displays relating to the Border Reivers days.
In addition, the Castleholm Community Trust will be on the showfield to share their plans for the area with locals and get their feedback.
There’s a host of other popular attractions too with Hebbs Alpacas from Canonbie returning with their fluffy flock; a Cumberland wrestling competition; vintage vehicles; a sheaf tossing tournament; and tug-of-war, as well as bouncy castles, fairground rides, stalls and sideshows.
The industrial tent is expected to be heaving with entries, with two new classes this year: for the longest nettle and biggest dock leaf.
There will be a prosecco bar alongside the regular bar and singer How Askew will be performing in the beer tent from early evening.
Chairman Robin added: “The livestock entries are looking good considering the summer that has just gone.
“We are especially pleased with the entries for the sheep young handlers, which is really good. We are very pleased to see the next generation coming on.
“We have got horses, a dog show and pet show too.
“We would welcome everyone to come along and support us and if you’ve never been before, you are guaranteed a warm welcome in one of the country’s most scenic showgrounds.”
