June warms up for home town gig

MOFFAT lass June Nelson is set to lead the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra (SFO) when they return to the region next month.

June is the new leader of the 90-strong orchestra and is known for her captivating solo performances and deep passion for traditional Scottish music.

As such, June brings a wealth of talent and experience.

The SFO is a renowned traditional orchestra that celebrates the rich heritage of Scottish music. For over 40 years the orchestra has been taking the beauty and heritage of Scotland’s traditional music to audiences across the globe. The concert at the Easterbrook Hall on April 5 will be June’s first at the helm and she’s excited for start her time as leader on home turf. She said: “I am excited and honoured to be the new leader of the SFO and to start with a home gig in Dumfries is amazing.

“The welcome we receive in Dumfries is second to none and we are delighted to be back, I can’t wait.”

April’s concert will be conducted by Blair Parham, who will share the stage with talented mezzo-soprano Colette Ruddy and young tenor, Christopher Haggerty. Also joining the orchestra will be John Caskie on the mic as compère, while Dumfries Pipe Band, led by pipe major Andy Maltman, will join the orchestra in some audience favourites for an evening of world-class entertainment.

Music lovers of all ages can expect to enjoy toe-tapping reels and jigs, lively strathspeys and marches, and poignant slow airs performed by the skilled members of one of Scotland’s foremost traditional music organisations.
