RESIDENTS and business owners in Kirkcudbright are delighted after Friday’s decision to reopen the town’s bridge to single file traffic later this summer.
The town, which is normally a bustling hub, had fallen eerily silent since the shock closure of the bridge at the end of March.
Since then many businesses have seen a significant fall in trading and an uncertain future looming over them.
Now things are looking up with the reopening to take place on or before Wednesday July 2, with a three-tonne weight limit, width restrictions and a lowered 20 miles per hour speed limit.
Reacting to the announcement, Nick Morris from the Kirkcudbright Bridge Action Group, said: “We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the entire community for your unwavering support and advocacy in the wake of the bridge’s sudden closure.
“Our collective voice has made a significant impact on the discussions within the council, and this news is a testament to your efforts.
“While this is a positive development in the short term, it is essential to remember that our work is not finished. We must continue to advocate for the construction of a new bridge to provide a long-term solution for our community.
“Let’s keep the momentum going, keep looking out for each other, working together, supporting those impacted by the closure and continue to send the message that Kirkcudbright is open for business.
“Thank you once again for your support.”
Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson has welcomed the announcement calling it a “significant step forward” for the community. He said: “This is fantastic news for the people of Kirkcudbright and the surrounding area. The bridge is a crucial connection for the town, and its closure has caused real hardship for many. I’m pleased that the council has carried out the necessary work to allow light vehicles to return.
“I want to thank everyone in the community that has shown great patience and resilience.”
Further details on the reopening schedule and traffic arrangements are expected to be released by the council in the coming weeks.
