Lauren aims for Olympic success

LONGTOWN has produced its very own Olympic athlete.

Lauren Smith is competing against the very best in World badminton at the Rio Olympics.

The 24-year-old kicked of her Olympic medal search against Malaysia in the womens’ doubles but Team GB lost 2-0.

Lauren peaked at world ranking of 24 and is hoping for greater success with her doubles partner Heather Oliver in the coming days.

Having started training from the age of seven, Lauren soon gained an aptitude for the sport — even managing to represent England at the age of 14.

Lauren became involved in the sport through her family, who are also keen players, and soon joined the Border Badminton Club.

Since then it has been a steady rise for Lauren, with success on both national and international level.
