THE Dalbeattie branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland (RBLS) is seeking cash support to stage two important memorial events this year.
The organisation has grand plans to mark the 80th anniversaries of VE and VJ days, which fall on May 8 and August 15 respectively.
The Dalbeattie legion branch has submitted a grant funding request to Dalbeattie Common Good Fund for £1260. This will pay most of the bill as the total costs are £2260.
The RBLS members explained their plans in the grant funding application. It states: “These events commemorate the 80th anniversaries of VE and VJ days.
“Remembrance services at the war memorial Colliston Park with Lord Lieutenant, youth organisations, military vehicles, RBLS biker branch and unveiling of commemorative plaques.
“Followed by WWII entertainment and buffet at the day centre for invited guests and others. Beacon lighting at Craignair quarry in line with national lighting at 9.30 pm accompanied with a small firework display.”
Dalbeattie Common Good Fund currently has a balance of £54,965 and a sum of £1649 is projected to be available to support such applications.
A council report prepared for the next committee meeting on April 16 states: “There are sufficient funds available to support the request.”
The grant application will be determined by councillors.
