Let there be light!

A PROJECT aiming to bring warmth, light, playfulness and curiosity to the centre of Dumfries is returning to the town for a second year.

D-Lux Festival runs alongside Big Burns Supper, and will introduce a number of light exhibitions to the area surrounding the Midsteeple. The festival of light kicks off with “Town Centre Illuminations” on Wednesday, which will make playful shapes and reinterpret buildings, including the Midsteeple. It will also see the premier of “Whose hoose is this”, a major Stove Network commission that will turn the former Bakers Oven into a video jukebox, projecting specially made 30 second films into the four bay windows at 135-139 High Street. Viewers in the square will be able to select which film they would like to see appear on the building using their smartphones, and D-Lux will working with groups to create content for the windows so the project can continue until April. The final part of this year’s D-Lux Festival is a new light artwork created by Hannah Fox and Jason Threlfall titled “Our Moon”, a projected animation piece generated from the facial expressions and stories of Dumfries residents. D-Lux founding member Robbie Coleman said: “We want to use light to celebrate the beauty of our surroundings and, in the spirit of play and discovery, invite visitors and townspeople to imagine what could be possible in Dumfries town centre.”
