CELEBRATE . . . Kyle Doherty

AN ECSTATIC Kyle Doherty hopes his Scottish Cup winner can help kickstart Queen of the South’s away form in the league.

The attacker found the back of the net in the final stages against Arbroath last Saturday to book the Doonhamers’ spot in the fourth round of the cup tourney.

Queens have been drawn at home to Premiership outfit St Mirren with the game to be played in January.

But now the focus is well and truly on League One and the Palmerston troops will have to travel back up to Gayfield for part two of the doubleheader.

And with Queens finally winning away from their home turf for the first time since late July, the team hope this can be a turning point.

The game will be shown on BBC Alba on Saturday night with Queens praying to end an astonishing winless run of 18 games on the telly.

After the cup win, Doherty said: “I’m buzzing. The Scottish Cup is a big tournament and we’re delighted to get through into the next round. We want to go as far we can.

“All of the team said in the dressing room that this is a must win game. It’s not an easy place to come so the boys in there are delighted.

“It’s good to get a win away from home as well. The lads have been really disappointed with our away form this season and hopefully this is the turning point.

“All the boys have big cheeses after Saturday’s win.”

And Queens gaffer Peter Murphy hopes he can have two of his injured players back for Saturday. He also hopes Harry Cochrane can shrug off an injury which saw the midfielder hobble off in the dying embers last week.

Murphy said: “We’ve got to make sure everyone is prepared. Hopefully we can get one or two more of the injured players back but we’ll have to see.

“Harry limped off but he gave us everything. He got a bad tackle but I know Harry will be desperate to play but we’ll need to assess him.

“It was a good battle last Saturday. Arbroath have had a good couple of results recently. It was a good fight and we came out on top.

“There were not a lot of chances and it was quite like a game of chess with both set of players battling and fighting for everything.

“It looked like it was going to take a mistake to win but it was a bit of quality from us. Kyle came on and made an impact.

“I’m delighted with that and how we saw out the game. Arbroath threw everything at us but we defended really well.

“I’m also delighted for the fans because we’ve had tough travels home but a good one on Saturday. Let’s hope we can enjoy another winning journey home next week.”
