IT’S Gala Eve in Lockerbie and excitement is at fever pitch for tomorrow.
Although the weather forecast is mixed, the Riding of the Marches principals are eagerly anticipating their big moment.
Cornet Grant Nelson said: “I’m ecstatic for the weekend and most looking forward to leading the cavalcade around town. Also, I’m looking forward to seeing the turnout of supporters, both people and horses.
“I’ve had a brilliant time so far, the weather has been mixed but it hasn’t dampened the spirits. I’m very lucky to have a great team on my side.”
For Cornet’s Lass Abbie Cowan, it’s a ‘real honour’ to represent the town. She said: “I am really looking forward to Gala Day alongside Grant, Katrina and Queen Mya. I can’t believe how quickly it has come around as it has been so much fun so far going to various events and rideouts, whether rain or shine.
“I am so excited to lead the cavalcade round the boundaries on Saturday and see everyone out having a good time.
“I would encourage anyone to come along to enjoy it as there is something for everyone to do and see. It is a tradition in the town which brings together the community and celebration.”
And Standard Bearer Katrina Carruthers described the past few weeks as a ‘whirlwind’, adding: “It’s just been a thoroughly amazing experience from the start.
“I can’t wait for Saturday, and to carry the town standard around the boundaries will be a huge honour. Come rain or shine, it’ll be a fantastic day.”
Meanwhile, they were all in their finery for the Cornet’s Ball at the ice rink last Saturday night, see pictures.
And this week has been spent on official duties, including school and care home visits and presenting prizes.
Now they’re preparing for an early start tomorrow and a busy morning checking the town’s boundaries.
It’s expected the top trio and their followers will hit the High Street to meet up with the pipe band, to lead the parade at about 12.30 pm.
The organisers are hoping that as well as the horses, there will be a good turnout of float and walkers, with an array of cash prizes and trophies up for grabs for the best entries.
Then it’s over to McJerrow Park for the free turn-up, where will be facepainting, glitter tattoos, a disco, soft play, giant games, a helter skelter and extreme arena, bungee run, rodeo bull, crazy golf, sensory play and a bouncy castle.
It runs from 1.30-5.30 pm, after which the beating of the retreat and massed pipe bands will take place on the high street.
It’s been a busy few days for chairman Ian McLatchie, who is putting the finishing touches to everything. He said: “Serving as chairman of Lockerbie Gala and Riding of the Marches for 15 years has been a true privilege and an honour to represent and celebrate the town of Lockerbie.”
