Lockerbie was focus for rail crime

FIVE railway crimes were reported in Dumfries and Galloway last year - and four of them were at or near Lockerbie station.

They were reported to the British Transport Police (BTP) in the year up to November 2021 and comprised two violent or sexual crimes and two thefts.

Meanwhile, one violent or sexual crime was reported at or near Gretna Green, according to recently-released figures.

However, there were no incidents recorded at all at Dumfries, Annan, Kirkconnel or Stranraer stations.

BTP is responsible for policing Britain’s railways and dealt with a total 38,299 reported crimes in total in the 12 month period, a fall from the two previous years. Offences included drugs, theft, graffiti, criminal damage and arson.

The 2020/21 BTP annual report said the drop in incidents nationally was mainly due to the ‘stay at home’ restrictions resulting in a quieter network and increase in rolling stock at sidings, allowing offenders more opportunity to commit offences.
