Lockerbie’s roundabout repair saga goes on

FRUSTRATION erupted at Lockerbie Community Council last week over the continued ‘neglect’ of the town’s gateway roundabouts.

Members blasted Dumfries and Galloway Council for a lack of action at the sites, near the ice rink and Queen’s Hotel.

They want them weeded, cleaned and tidied up, ahead of possible future discussions about a longer term emblem being placed there.

Chairman Ken Bailey said: “We were told last year it was a priority, but that’s all we get, nothing else happens.”

Treasurer Roger Claymore described them as a ‘disgrace’, saying: “Some of the Lockerbie signs are covered in green and are filthy. The

Rotary Club was told by the council that they cannot do anything due to health and safety and in case they collapse on someone, but if they could collapse on somebody then they should not be there anyway.”

Vice chairman Ian McLatchie added: “The roundabouts have been getting fixed for about seven years, nothing ever happens.

“The state of the road on the way in is all weeds approaching the roundabout.

“It’s not just me, it’s townfolk and visitors mentioning it too. It’s just a bit tedious now, it’s embarrassing and it’s just awful for visitors. We are getting more visitors coming.”

He went on: “It’s just disgusting that we cannot get anything done, people are even offering go round with strimmers because they care.”

The elected members present all insisted they have reported the issues on various occasions to officials.

Annandale North Councillor Gail Macgregor said: “They have allocated funding for it but I do not know when it will be done, it will be within the financial year.”

Fellow councillor Stephen Thompson added: “We keep getting told it’s on the programme. We can we can push for it to be progressed, but there are lots of projects needing done and issues all over the place.”
