A FATAL Accident Inquiry is going to be held later this year into the death of an HGV driver on the A74(M) near Moffat.
Thomas Hein, 25, who was German, was killed when his lorry left the road near Junction 15 on Friday July 14 2023.
He was driving for the firm of Josef Schnell.
A preliminary hearing into Mr Hein’s death will take place next week at Dumfries Sheriff Court and the full FAI will be held on May 29.
Procurator Fiscal Andy Shanks, who leads on death investigations for The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS), said: “The death of Thomas Hein occurred while in the course of his employment and as such a Fatal Accident Inquiry is mandatory.
“The lodging of the First Notice enables FAI proceedings to commence under the direction of the sheriff.
“Mr Hein’s family will continue to be kept informed of significant developments as court proceedings progress.”
The purpose of a FAI includes determining the cause of death; the circumstances in which the deaths occurred, and to establish what, if any, reasonable precautions could have been taken, and could be implemented in the future, to minimise the risk of future deaths in similar circumstances.
