Low covid numbers in schools

FIGURES have been released showing the impact of covid in the region’s schools - with only 25 cases in total since August.

Since the start of the new academic year, there have been just 21 positive cases in pupils and four in staff in the whole of Dumfries and Galloway.

However, it has resulted in 554 youngsters having to self isolating since then, as well as 65 staff members, due to being possible close contacts.

And, of the positive cases within a school setting, there has been only one instance where there has been a contact within a school community who has gone on to test positive.

Council bosses say it shows the measures they have put in place are proving effective in reducing the spread of the virus.

Education director Gillian Brydson explained the different approaches taken range from self isolation of single pupils, through to whole class groups and a two week closure of two small schools with learning moved online.

In a report for councillors, due to be presented next week, she gives more background, saying: “As the prevalence of the pandemic within the community has risen over the last two months, so too has the level of staff absence due to the requirement to self-isolate for two weeks as a result of being a close contact of a positive case.

“In addition, there are short term absences where the staff members are symptomatic and awaiting a test and results. There is significant pressure across schools and the resources available to meet the increase in referrals for additional support.

“Covid-19 related absence is currently being monitored and reported weekly to Scottish Government and is currently showing an average of 20 teachers per week over the last ten weeks. School support staff absence recorded is an average of ten support staff per week. Within nursery settings, the levels of absence are similar and rising.”
