SOMETIMES it just isn’t your day in football, and it certainly seemed that way at Galabank on Saturday when the crossbar denied the home side three times over the course of 90 minutes.

Annan were beaten 1-0 by Dumbarton, the solitary goal being scored by Gregg Wylde at the start of the second half. His impressive header turned out to be enough to win the game for The Sons, even after Tony Wallace, Robb McCartney and Aidan Smith came within inches of scoring for the home side. But they all watched their efforts crash off the crossbar.

The defeat means Annan slip to the bottom of the SPFL, below Albion Rovers on goal difference.

After the match Annan boss Peter Murphy said: “I think we dominated both halves, territorially. But Dumbarton set up to counter attack, and hitting the bar three times in any game then you know luck is not going your way.

“At the moment things don’t seem to be going for us, although we are still playing quite well.

“We have dropped to the bottom of the league and they are second in the league, and there is not a lot between us.

“And that’s this league this year. We know that we have to turn it around really quick, and even if we don’t play well we need to get three points and hopefully that builds a little bit of confidence.

“If you look around the whole pitch there were good performances all round, but in the critical period, just two and a half minutes into the second half ,we let their winger get around our man, put in a cross and the header goes into the top corner. And goals change games.”

Opportunity

Now Murphy’s squad prepare for a journey to Forfar tomorrow.

The league remains tight, and if The Black and Golds can manage to muster up a couple of wins in the coming weeks then they will be propelled back up the table.

Annan’s last win in all competitions came against the Angus side on September 3 at Galabank. A positive result in the reverse fixture tomorrow would allow Annan to leapfrog their opponents who sit just one point ahead in eighth.

Murphy said: “Forfar is a big game, obviously we are bottom, Albion drew and Forfar are a point above us.

“If we play the way we did today then I think we will get a win or a draw. But this league is very strange this year.”
