Man arrested after shop ‘weapon’ reports

STAFF in shops on Moffat High Street were left shaken this week after a man entered three stores with what seemed to be a weapon.

Witnesses say that the man went into the Moffat Toffee Shop, Manse Interiors and McGary’s Premier shop one after the other on Tuesday morning.

It’s also claimed he had earlier been seen acting oddly in the area of the riverside.

Staff from one of the town centre establishments also alleged that he was behaving ‘eccentrically’ as he perused that shop and even made purchases with the ‘weapon’ on full display.

They said: “He was behaving quite eccentrically so the only thing we could think to do was keep ourselves calm and hope he would be the same.

“The whole thing was really upsetting because you don’t know what to do in that situation.

“I’m just glad that no one was hurt and that the police came and dealt with him.”

Commenting further on the incident, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 11.45am on Tuesday, 1 August, 2023 we received a report of a man in possession of what appeared to be a weapon on High Street, Moffat.

“No one was injured.

“A 60-year-old man has been arrested in connection and enquiries are ongoing.”
