Massive ICT clash

ANNAN Athletic boss Wullie Gibson knows a positive result against Inverness this weekend could go a long way in securing league safety.

The Black and Golds are due to welcome the cash-strapped Highlanders at Galabank on Saturday. With freezing temperatures expected to continue into the weekend, there’s a chance the game could fall foul to the weather.

But if the contest does get the green light to go ahead and Gibson’s men beat Caley they would move ten points clear of the relegation play-off spot.

However, Gibson knows it’ll be a tough match against a team who are in a false position due to their points deduction earlier this season.

He said: “I don’t want to put too much pressure on the game. Obviously we want to go out and win the match.

“Inverness are in a false position in the league due to the administration. They’ve managed to keep a lot of their experienced players, there’s not been too much disruption.

“They’ve clawed back some of the distance and have a game in hand over us against Queen of the South in a couple of weeks time.

“It’s tight, we want to keep that distance between us and Inverness as big as possible. Avoiding defeat on Saturday would help but to win the game would set us up nicely. We want to be looking up the way and not behind us.”

Annan will be without star forward Aidan Smith for two matches after he was sent off in the 1-1 draw away to Stenhousemuir. Josh Todd is a doubt whilst Rico Quitongo is available for selection.

Gibson added: “If you look at our last five matches we’ve only lost to Arbroath. We would’ve liked more points from those games as we’ve probably been the better team in most of them.

“On Saturday, I felt we were the better team but when Aidan Smith received a red card we had to take our medicine and make sure we came down the road with a point.”

Meanwhile, it’s been announced Aaron Quigg and Charlie Barnes have departed the club.

Gibson added: “Aaron was only on a short-term deal. He hadn’t really had much game time. We had an honest discussion and we both felt it was right to move on.

“Charlie played 40 games for Lancaster City last year. I took a wee punt on him this year but it hasn’t worked out. He’s not had a lot of game time. He wants to go seek other opportunities and can open up space to get more players.”

Gibson is aiming to do business as quickly as possible to help boost his dwindling numbers.

He said: “We’ve had conversations about players with a couple of clubs, we need to do this quickly as we do have a limited squad at the moment.

“We’re looking to get one forward and one defender. If we can get that done I would be happy and anything else would be a bonus.”

Ji Stevenson and Luca Ross have extended their deals until the end of the season.
