McCamon claims by-election victory

DUMFRIES and Galloway Council's Conservative group has added a new member to its ranks after taking victory in the Mid Galloway and Wigtown West by-election.

Tory candidate Jackie McCamon received a total of 2177 votes to take the win ahead of the SNP’s Tony Berretti, who received 898 votes.

Peter Richard Barlow came third for the Scottish Green Party with 225 votes, with Labour’s Gill Hay in fourth with 220.

Voter turn out was 32.5 per cent.

Yesterday’s by-election had been called following the death of councillor Graham Nicol, the Conservative group’s depute leader, in October last year.
