MOFFAT’S Dowding memorial is set to get a scrub up ahead of the annual commemorative ceremony next month.
The cleaning of monuments and statues has been a hot topic across Upper Annandale, with calls to spruce up the standstone monument in Station Park which had turned almost black.
Earlier this week Dumfries and Galloway Council, which usually maintains the memorial, confirmed to the Lord Dowding Committee its approval for the clean up by Moffat-based company Global Sand Blasting free of charge.
A council official stated: “The council architectural services team have had correspondence with the company directly and are happy for the work to be carried out so long as it is done at low pressure and care is taken at joints not to loosen the material.
“They have advised that this memorial is classified as a war memorial so should be maintained in accordance with guidance notes.
“Therefore we are happy for this work to be carried out as offered by the firm.”
