Micro grants agreed
FOUR Sanquhar residents were given a helping hand in pursuing their professional careers and sporting ambitions through community grants.

A trainee flight attendant, a student learning in Glasgow, a junior studying musical theatre, and British curling hopeful all received £250 payments after applying for micro grants through The Royal Burgh of Sanquhar Common Good fund.
A total of £2000 was available in the fund and it was agreed that the cash would be dished out local groups and individuals.
A council report will be tabled at Sanquhar Common Good Fund Sub Committee next week detailing how the money was distributed.
It states: “At Sanquhar Common Good Fund Sub Committee on March 1, 2023, it was agreed that The Royal Burgh of Sanquhar and District Community Council would be responsible for the disbursement of a micro grant fund of £2000 per year, for disbursement to local groups and individuals.
“All applications would be considered at a community council meeting and community councillors would make decisions and disburse funds where
appropriate.
“The availability of the fund was advertised locally and applications were considered at the community council meetings.
“During 2023/24 The Royal Burgh of Sanquhar Community Council disbursed funding totalling £2000 to eight local projects/individuals.”
The community groups that benefitted were: Sanquhar and District Men’s Shed – £250 for refurbishment of Queensberry Square benches; Sanquhar Enterprise Company – £250 for the Bell Crescent Play Park project children’s consultation; Sanquhar and Upper Nithsdale Curling Club – £250 for the club’s 250th Anniversary celebration including expenses for Bonspiel; and Sanquhar Fire Station – £250 for Halloween celebrations for children
at the station.
Four grants of £250 were handed out to individuals for: training and competition costs towards Scottish Academy and British Curling; equipment and travel costs associated with training at Glasgow Caledonian University; contribution towards travel costs for studying musical theatre at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for juniors; and support for a cabin crew training course.
